Welcome to my hiking guide for South Lake Tahoe. I’ve already done some guides to indivdual hikes in the area on the channel, but thought a showcase of my favourite would be a great way for you to decide what works for you.
Don’t forget to clicks the in-video links if you want to dive into a hike in more detail.
1. Van Sickle Hike
This hiking trail sits within Lake Tahoe’s newest state park, and it is really easy to find from South Lake Tahoe. The trailhead is right underneath the Gondola which climbs the Heavenly Mountain. You’ll find maps, restrooms and bins as you begin the trail so you can be prepared.
It’s a moderate hike that is great for families, and you’ll walk through alpine forests, explore some amazing vista areas that provide stunning views of Lake Tahoe and reach a small waterfall which is ideal for lunch and your turnaround spot.
2. Eagle Lake Hike
There are three options on the Eagle Lake hike. You can either just do the Upper Eagle Falls loop, or you can carry on to Lake Eagle. Those even more adventurous can continue even further to Desolation Wilderness.
Eagle Lake is a great place to aim for though. Once you have crossed the Eagle Falls bridge, continue up the trail. Soon you’ll see great views back to Emerald Bay and then as you carry on, Eagle Lake in all its glory will come into view. It’s a glorious place to relax for as long as you want before heading back down the mountain.
3. Emerald Bay – Rubicon Trail
The Rubicon Trail is a great day out if you combine it with the beach and a kayak. The trail begins at the Eagle Point campground and then goes downhill with Lake Tahoe to your right. Once you reach lake level, you’ll cross the Lower Eagle Falls bridge, head to the right and then find yourself on the Vikingsholm estate where there is a visitor’s centre, beach, kayak rental and more to enjoy.
From here you can either continue along the Rubicon trail to the west of Lake Tahoe or turnaround and head back up the trail to Eagle Point Campground.
4. Zephyr Cover Trail
The Zephyr Cove trail isn’t really advertised but it’s a great walk to do if you love the beach. The trail begins behind the beach at the Zephyr Lodge and follows the shoreline of Lake Tahoe along. With so many coves and small beaches along the shore, you’ll soon find one that you can enjoy to yourself.
5. Cascade Falls Trail
The Cascade Falls hike is one of South Lake Tahoe’s most popular. It’s easy to do but offers incredible views of Cascade Lake and the trail is really fun too.
The trailhead is at the Bayview Campground, you’ll need to walk to the back where you’ll see signs to follow.
As you as you start walking properly the lake comes into view on the left and you will follow it along until you reach Cascade Falls. Depending on the time of the year you go, you’ll either see the falls as strong as they can be or a little calmer than normal. Either way, this hike is a perfect little half-day adventure.
Thanks for watching! In my next two episode’s I travel to Los Angeles, where I’ll be showcasing to you an LA Dodgers game and how to hike to the Hollywood sign.

South Lake Tahoe is a special place for hiking, so I’ve loved putting this hiking guide together so you can work out which trails take your fancy. Let me know in the comments below which trail you’d like to do!
We did Van Sickle, though the state line marker is worth visiting we found the falls and trail to be generally underwhelming. Everything else you recommended was amazing, but for anyone going I’d recommend keeping Van Sickle only as an additional hike if you have the time and need something else to do. Worth mentioning that It was also littered with dog poop bags from locals — we WITNESSED multiple people throwing their bags to the side of the trail. The same people were letting their dogs walk unleashed as well.
