Landscape Photography – Searching for Locations

Landscape Photography – Searching for Locations

In this video, me and Simon go by foot and search high and low for landscape photography locations around Loch Maree in the north west highlands of Scotland. We find some great locations, we also find some not so great locations.

I don’t understand what your YouTube channel is supposed to be. Are you selling products because there is certainly no substance.

I recently tried my hand at taking a few landscape photos and one of my biggest challenges was that I couldn’t see anything on my LCD screen. Which was a shame because I tried to learn as much as possible about focus stacking etc before I went and in the end I couldn’t see well enough to focus! How do the pros get around that? I’ve never seen any mention of the issue in any video or tutorial. I’m stumped. Trying now to build some tyoe of hood for the little screen. I’ve seen hoods for sale but I’ve never seen any pro using one in their landscape shoots. What am I missing? Was I just outside at a bad time of day?

I would have been cringing every time the dog walked by the front of the lens. You just know they’re going to hop into the water, hop out, then shake all over the camera… I’m surprised it didn’t happen. Maybe Murphy’s Law doesn’t apply in Scotland?

    Production quality going WAY UP!

Enjoyed the video as always Thomas 🙂 I couldn’t agree more about getting your boots dirty and taking it all in on foot.
However, there’s a lot to be said for watching videos, reading books/magazines (especially the FotoVue series of books, and videos by Mads Peter Iversen) when scouting for locations.
As a domestic appliance engineer, living in Kent. It’s hard finding the time to get out (especially to the best locations, which tend to be North/West). So it’s not easy finding time to put my boots on 🙁
Also, I have a question. Do you ever send the drone out across and lake/across a valley etc. in order to see if there’s a descent view from the other side, instead of walking for another half hour?

    what beautiful country this is!

This was me 4 days ago! I should have watched this when it was uploaded 😅

  13. @Jeff-jg7jh on September 6, 2024 at 4:26 pm

Howdy. The foreground weaves to the right into the background. The geological lines do what they want.

  14. @vinayhaalgaar on September 6, 2024 at 4:31 pm

That was my least favourite image of yours. Keep Rocking 👍🏼

  15. @HenryPiffpaff on September 6, 2024 at 4:32 pm

Superb landscape and videography! I was also happy to see a wide-angle shot again, although it somehow didn’t quite excite me as much. Maybe it was even a bit too much foreground for my taste and I’d probably have liked it better in color as well (even if there was little).

I am amazed, however, at the diversity of the landscape! Never knew Scotland was as varied as that. 0:10 and 0:14 would already have been nice enough landscapes/perspectives for me to take a photo 🙂

  16. @doloreshooijschuur9718 on September 6, 2024 at 4:33 pm

Could you make a video about focus stacking? From in the field to the edited image? That would be amazing!! I do not really get how to do it and how to edit those kind of images 🙁

  17. @MovingTargetOne on September 6, 2024 at 4:34 pm

Love this. I live near that loch(nearer the coast), and having explored so much of the area previously, and recently gotten into photography, I’m so excited to go back to many places with an eye for capture.

Where can I get that filter adapter to make it easier to rotate a circular polarizer at time 8:45?

  22. @paulm8157 on September 6, 2024 at 4:40 pm

The vid mentions briefly “at this time”, but wouldn’t time of year be a scouting factor? A poor venue in summer might be great in the fall or winter. No?

  23. @ceilihmcgrady4125 on September 6, 2024 at 4:40 pm

That was a beautiful shot of the rocks leading out into the water. Why did you chose black and white, if you don’t mind me asking?

  24. @85rezam on September 6, 2024 at 4:41 pm

Nice job Thomas! You usually use telephoto lens so when you use a wide angle like this time, I will be excited to see the results! BTW you had the ultimate solution for finding photogenic sites: explore by foot. Thank you!

  25. @cmmatzat on September 6, 2024 at 4:43 pm

Any more advice on finding general locations to scout? Obviously looking at others’ photos of an area can help you choose, but I don’t want to go photograph a place that is already captured by everyone else.

  26. @geekdiseltd3495 on September 6, 2024 at 4:43 pm

Will you come here in China and explore China’s great landscape?

  27. @alcairns149 on September 6, 2024 at 4:47 pm

I was expecting a good image, but that’s top notch. Much more of the foreground in the image than I was expecting, but works beautifully.

  28. @praveensabari1158 on September 6, 2024 at 4:47 pm

    Very nice

  29. @jamesjohnston6765 on September 6, 2024 at 4:49 pm

Meg loves to be a star. I think the scouting trip may have been more fun for you three then the future workshop 😉

  30. @robertgrenader858 on September 6, 2024 at 4:49 pm

Your commitment to Canon is holding you back. You owe it to your extreme talent as a landscape Photographer to look at a Nikon D850. The built in Focus Stacking will take your landscapes up several notches.

  31. @jonahwigley3313 on September 6, 2024 at 4:49 pm

Seriously 38 thumbs down? Can some of the thumbs downers let us know why you do that? Genuinely interested.

  33. @jjagelka on September 6, 2024 at 4:51 pm

Thanks for posting this video! This is my frustration when I get to a new location. My excitement turns to frustration as I search out vantage points. Each of my trips end with me making a vow to come back to get it right next time. I’m glad I’m not alone with the challenge of finding the shot.

  34. @muminki7783 on September 6, 2024 at 4:51 pm

Hi Thomas, subscribed without watching this vid, left for later coz I’m bit busy, but I have seen couple of other ones and I’m impressed of your work. Thanks for doing it. Regards

  35. @RichardLefroy on September 6, 2024 at 4:52 pm

6:33 is that how you normally add saturation to your images?

  36. @OutdoorsmanDave on September 6, 2024 at 4:53 pm

Meg seems a wonderful companion & complements your stories

  37. @Yamanotefy on September 6, 2024 at 4:57 pm

It’s another great video Thomas and I enjoy your passion through the distance. Not much else to say other than I am very looking forward to your many adventures to come.
PS: A minor thing, don’t want to sound too harsh and I know there’s no bad intention from your side, but it would be nicer, if you don’t name yourself first, ie "Me and Simon …". As said, no offence, just a tip – much love!

  38. @zachhallphotography on September 6, 2024 at 4:58 pm

“Right now it’s the middle of the day, it’s no good for photography”….. Thomas, you have truly been and will continue to be a landscape photography inspiration to me (I definitely recommend you in my blogs and presentations as well 🙂 ) but I’ll be honest, that statement I have to disagree with. I’ve seen many beautiful shots come from the middle of the day. In fact, there are times I prefer those types of shots with vibrant blue skies, milky white clouds and the radiant green grass. They compliment each other beautifully which only makes a superb composition that much better! To make a general statement like that may lead newer photographers to think the only time of day they should shoot is sunrise or sunset. It’s funny that this came up because just the other day I was thinking to myself how I’d really like to see you do some outings that are more mid-day based. Maybe this will help 🙂 – sincerely, one of your biggest fans!!

Beautiful countryside! Exploring is always a good portion of the fun. Thanks for the tour.

Woaaah! Looks like I’ll have to go to scotland. That place doesn’t look like any pictures I’ve seen of scotland. I better do some scouting while I’m there 😛 Thanks Thomas, looks awesome. I love ur perspective on all of this. And meg is just beautiful hahah

Please enjoy every second with that lovely dog. I lost one of mine on Monday, Rocket, a Cocker Spaniel and we are absolutely devastated…….all we have of him now is our memories. We still have his brother who sadly has kidney disease so we are restricted in what we can do but they both loved the Highlands so much. This makes me want to get back with the camera but I don’t think I could just now. Love those doggy friends like they love you…

  45. @BenHorne on September 6, 2024 at 5:05 pm

This is one of the first videos I’ve watched full screen on my new 27" IMac. 🙂 I really like that you are showing this side of photography — searching for subjects, crossing some off the list, and thoroughly enjoying your time outdoors. All that hard work really pays off in the long run.

  46. @SteveMillerhuntingforfood on September 6, 2024 at 5:05 pm

Thomas, nice discussion of your planning and scouting.

When I look at your final composition my eye follows those fine lines (probably glacial striations) through the rock outcrop, to island and distant mountain. The striations are very subtle, however, there are so many lines it carries the eye through the frame. The transverse lines (jointing in the rock) make for a nice contrast or distraction.

Thanks, I always learn something new when I watch your videos.

  47. @CarloDidier on September 6, 2024 at 5:05 pm

Welcome to my favorite part of Scotland 😀
Have you seen the area north of Loch Maree, Fisherfield Forest?

  48. @tombuck on September 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

I always have a tough time bridging the gap between what looks to my eyes vs. what looks best in camera– the two are often quite different.

  49. @anthonysalas9167 on September 6, 2024 at 5:07 pm

One of your best videos for me mate, well done. You seem a lot happier these days too… dont look so stressed – keep up the great work.
