There’s certainly some value to this tutorial, you’re basically saying it’s a matter of contrast, and making use of basic dramatic light at its core with strong shadows. All while adding *tone* to this piece by adding subtle colours to the environment. As well as somewhat breaking down what types of light to think of.

This is certainly one way of going about it. Note that not everyone uses Photoshop, and so not everyone will have access to a "Levels adjustment layer." The same I believe can be achieved with some basic layer masks (multiply, addition, etc.) and using the same erasing method. Granted you’ll need to keep track of your colour, or experiment to find a similar feature to use instead. It might’ve served well to explain for some, _why_ each part is important, but nonetheless, the point was surely delivered. ┐(^~^;)β”Œ

Overall a good concept display to help broaden the spectrum for newer artists, or just artists in general, alike. Honestly, might actually have been just what I needed. ✧(^ ^ )ゝ

I am almost losing being a "beginner" with a bit of years of experience and I can confirm I used to obsess about small little unnoticeable details, which are the number one reason why I don’t finish works, and I lose motivation half-way. I look at the tiny details and think "I’m too lazy for this shit" lol.

OMG thank you so much for this! I love dramatic lighting in paintings and always struggled to literally paint the light beams and shadows on my normal painting layer. Of course I use overlay etc., twitch the levels, curves at the end of the process and work with masks through the painting but I never thought about using levels with masks for the lighting itself. You saved me so much future working hours on my pieces! Again thank you, much appreciated
